Mestrado em Física Médica
Description
The Mestrado em Física Médica aims to respond to the need for specific academic training required for qualified professionals in the field of Medical Physics, as per the Directive 2013/59/EURATOM (Decree-Law No. 108/2018 and Ordinance No. 254/2021).
Objectives
The program will provide students with a comprehensive and integrated vision of the scientific, technical, technological, socio-economic, legal, and ethical topics associated with Medical Physics, meeting legal requirements and international recommendations.
The curriculum is based on updated recommendations from the European Commission, the European Federation of Organisations for Medical Physics, and regulations, norms, and safety standards from the International Atomic Energy Agency and the World Health Organization.
Competencies
- Introduction, development, modification of medical technology for diagnosis and therapy
- Development of quality assurance programs according to European standards, with emphasis on radiological protection and safety for patients, professionals, and the public
- Installation and use of medical devices and radiological protection relevant to professional practice in Medical Physics
- Calculation of radiation doses and radiological risk for workers and patients in medical radiology, nuclear medicine, intervention, and radiotherapy procedures
- Training in advanced topics in diagnosis and therapy to follow scientific, technological, and technical developments in Medical Physics and evaluate their clinical applications
Professional Outcomes
Graduates in Medical Physics can obtain certification as Specialists in Medical Physics through a competition for internships promoted by the Central Administration of Health Systems (ACSS), according to Ordinance 96/2024/1 of March 11.
Graduates can work in sectors such as Health, Industry, Environment, Research, and Regulation in areas like Radiotherapy, Nuclear Medicine, Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, Dosimetry, and Radiological Protection.
They are qualified to contribute to activities such as:
- Development, implementation, and optimization of medical technologies for diagnosis and therapy
- Development of quality assurance and control programs for medical devices
- Optimization and guarantee of radiological protection and safety for patients, health professionals, the public, and the environment
- Scientific research and development
- Commercialization of products, equipment, and processes
- Consulting, leadership, management, and teaching roles
Operational Regime
The course is taught in conjunction with the Instituto Superior Técnico and the Faculdade de Medicicina - Universidade de Lisboa.
