Mestrado em Cięncias Equinas

Overview

The Mestrado em Cięncias Equinas (Master's in Equine Sciences) is a postgraduate program offered by the Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária (FMV) of the Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa). The program aims to provide advanced training in the production and use of equines, grounded in the latest technical and scientific knowledge.


Objectives

The program has two main objectives:


  • Provide high-level training in the area of equine production and use, contributing to the formation of professionals with a solid foundation in the basic and applied sciences of this area.
  • Contribute to the development and consolidation of scientific research in this domain, promoting the application of specialized knowledge and innovative methodologies.

Specific Objectives

The specific objectives of the program include:


  • Understanding and comprehending the complexity of equine anatomy and physiology.
  • Integrating and relating physiological processes associated with exercise.
  • Comprehending the biomechanics of equine locomotion and its practical application to equestrian sports.
  • Understanding the importance of genetics and animal improvement.
  • Designing, managing, and evaluating equine production systems.
  • Knowing the technical characteristics and particularities of sports and non-sports activities involving equines.

Eligibility

The program is open to holders of a bachelor's or master's degree, or equivalent, in the areas of Veterinary Sciences, Zootechnics, Agrarian Sciences, and Biological Sciences or related fields. Individuals with a curriculum that is recognized by the program's Scientific Commission as suitable for the course may also apply.


Funcionamento

Program Structure

The program lasts for 4 semesters (2 years), comprising a total of 120 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits. It consists of a curricular component with 62 ECTS and a dissertation with 58 ECTS.


Schedule

The curricular component (1st year) will be taught on Thursdays from 4 pm to 10 pm, Fridays from 9 am to 6 pm, and Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm.

Tuition Fees

  • National or equivalent students: 2,000 in the 1st year + 1,500 in the 2nd year, paid in 10 installments each year.
  • International students: 3,000 in the 1st year + 2,500 in the 2nd year, paid in 10 installments each year.

Teaching Format

Classes will be taught in person, primarily in Portuguese, although some classes may occasionally be taught in English.

The program is coordinated by the Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária but involves the formal participation of two other schools of the Universidade de Lisboa: the Faculdade de Motricidade Humana and the Instituto Superior de Agronomia.
