Introduction to the Portuguese as a Foreign Language Summer Course

The Portuguese as a Foreign Language Summer Course is celebrating its 90th edition, reaffirming its commitment to the promotion and global dissemination of the Portuguese language and culture.


History of the Summer Course

The origins of the initiative date back to the 1930s, when it was known as the University of Lisbon Summer Course, an intensive experience in language, culture, and social learning. The first edition took place in Cascais, at the Castro Guimar„es Palace Museum, with the goal of establishing a citadel of Portuguese culture.


Mission and Objectives

As a teaching and research unit of the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon, the Instituto de Cultura e LÌngua Portuguesa (ICLP) has several core missions:


  • Promote the Portuguese language and culture
  • Develop training programmes for Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PFL) teachers
  • Offer Portuguese courses for specific professional purposes
  • Support research in the acquisition and teaching of PFL
  • Provide academic and pedagogical support to institutions committed to the dissemination of the Portuguese language
