SMART Program

The SMART Program is a summer undergraduate research training program that:


  • Offers research experience in a laboratory setting
  • Requires applicants to have prior research experience outside of a high school or college course lab
  • Has specific application components, including:
    • Letter of Recommendation
    • Essays
    • Transcripts

Letter of Recommendation

Letters of recommendation should be from individuals who know the applicant's potential in a lab setting and can articulate their skills and qualities. The letters should be specific and provide examples of the applicant's strengths and areas for improvement.


Essays

Applicants must submit an essay describing prior research experience or areas of interest. An optional personal statement can also be submitted to describe the applicant's interest in science and motivation to pursue a career as a research scientist.


Transcripts

Applicants must upload an unofficial transcript and submit an official transcript from their undergraduate institution if selected for the program.
