Emergency Medicine Residency Program
The Emergency Medicine Residency program at Baylor College of Medicine is a three-year, ACGME-accredited program that aims to develop clinically exceptional emergency medicine practitioners. The program is designed to provide residents with a comprehensive education and training experience, preparing them for a career in emergency medicine.
Program Aims
The program has four primary aims:
- Clinical Excellence Across Diverse Practice Landscapes: Develop residents into clinically exceptional emergency medicine practitioners who excel across a wide spectrum of practice environments, patient populations, and levels of acuity.
- Community-Centered Care Excellence: Train emergency medicine residents to provide high-quality, culturally sensitive, and patient-centered care to the underserved population in the community.
- Health Equity Advocacy and Research: Cultivate a cadre of emergency medicine practitioners who are advocates for health equity, identifying and addressing disparities in care, engaging in community outreach initiatives, and contributing to scholarship related to healthcare disparities.
- Multi-Disciplinary Collaboration and Leadership: Foster teamwork and interdisciplinary skills, recognizing that effective emergency care requires collaboration among various healthcare disciplines.
Program Description
The program is located in Houston, Texas, within the Texas Medical Center, the world's largest medical complex. The primary clinical site is Ben Taub General Hospital, a level 1 trauma center, comprehensive stroke center, and certified chest pain center. Residents also train at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, home of the Texas Heart Institute, and the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, the largest VA hospital in Texas. To ensure a robust pediatric experience, residents rotate at Texas Children's Hospital, ranked third in the country amongst pediatric hospitals.
Curriculum
The residency curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive education and training experience, with a focus on clinical excellence, community-centered care, health equity advocacy, and multi-disciplinary collaboration. The curriculum includes:
