Program Overview


Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship Program

The Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship Program at Baylor College of Medicine is designed to provide fellows with a comprehensive education and training experience in forensic psychiatry.


Curriculum

The curriculum includes weekly seminars in various areas, such as:


  • Forensic Psychiatry Core Concepts
  • Civil Forensic Psychiatry Series
  • Criminal Forensic Psychiatry Series
  • Special Topics (e.g., Malingering, Risk Assessment, Confidentiality)
  • Landmark Case Series
  • Correctional / Carceral Psychiatry Series
  • Child and Adolescent Forensic Psychiatry Series
  • Law and Psychiatry Series
  • Psychologic Testing
  • Mock Trial
  • Cultural Psychiatry and Health Equity

Fellows will also attend the psychiatry department's weekly Grand Rounds and participate in individual and group supervision to review reports and case conferences. Each fellow will be encouraged and supported in completing scholarly work during the fellowship, including presentations at the AAPL annual meeting, other relevant psychiatry meetings, publications, and/or original research.

Affiliates and Goals of Rotation

MEDVAMC Veteran's Justice Outreach Rotation

Fellows will spend time in the veteran court rotation, where they will be involved in the collaborative Veterans' Treatment Court. The goals of this rotation include:


  1. Providing a specialized forensic psychiatry experience with veterans.
  2. Gaining experience with the evaluation and treatment of persons involved with the criminal justice system.
  3. Developing competence in conducting forensic evaluations and writing reports.
  4. Coordinating with legal and clinical entities in the evaluation and treatment of offenders.
  5. Appreciating psychiatric treatment issues pertinent to the forensic psychiatric population.
  6. Continuing to develop skills and knowledge necessary for the competent practice of forensic psychiatry.

The Harris County Jail Competency and Sanity Evaluations Unit

The goals of this rotation include:


  1. Providing a specialized forensic psychiatry experience with inmates.
  2. Gaining experience with the evaluation and treatment of persons involved with the criminal justice system.
  3. Learning about Texas' legal standards for competency to stand trial and sanity at the time of the offense.
  4. Developing competence in conducting forensic evaluations and writing reports.
  5. Coordinating with legal and clinical entities in the evaluation and treatment of offenders.
  6. Appreciating psychiatric treatment issues pertinent to the forensic psychiatric population.
  7. Continuing to develop skills and knowledge necessary for the competent practice of forensic psychiatry.

The Harris County Jail Based Competency Restoration Unit

The goals of this rotation include:


  1. Providing a specialized forensic psychiatry experience with incarcerated patients.
  2. Gaining experience with the evaluation and treatment of persons involved with the criminal justice system.
  3. Developing competence in conducting forensic evaluations and writing reports.
  4. Coordinating with legal and clinical entities in the evaluation and treatment of offenders.
  5. Appreciating psychiatric treatment issues pertinent to the forensic psychiatric population.
  6. Continuing to develop skills and knowledge necessary for the competent practice of forensic psychiatry.

The Harris County Jail Juvenile Justice Rotation

The goals of this rotation include:


  1. Providing a specialized forensic psychiatry experience in the juvenile justice system.
  2. Gaining experience with the evaluation and treatment of persons involved with the juvenile justice system.
  3. Learning about Texas' legal standards for forensic evaluations of children and adolescents.
  4. Developing competence in conducting forensic evaluations and writing reports.
  5. Coordinating with legal and clinical entities in the evaluation and treatment of children and adolescents.
  6. Appreciating psychiatric treatment issues pertinent to the juvenile justice population.
  7. Continuing to develop skills and knowledge necessary for the competent practice of forensic psychiatry.

The Menninger Clinic/ Baylor Psychiatry Clinic Forensic Rotation

The goals of this rotation include:


  1. Providing a specialized forensic psychiatry experience with a focus on civil forensic evaluations.
  2. Gaining experience with the evaluation and treatment of persons involved with the criminal justice system.
  3. Developing competence in conducting forensic evaluations and writing reports.
  4. Coordinating with legal and clinical entities in the evaluation and treatment of patients and evaluees.
  5. Appreciating psychiatric treatment issues pertinent to the forensic psychiatric population.
  6. Continuing to develop skills and knowledge necessary for the competent practice of forensic psychiatry.
