Internal Medicine Residency
Curriculum
The Internal Medicine Residency at Baylor College of Medicine is committed to training the best physicians in the country. The curriculum includes:
- PGY-1 Year: Building a strong foundation in internal medicine with general medicine wards teams, elective and critical care rotations, and continuity clinic panels.
- PGY-2 Year: Solidifying skills in diagnosis, treatment, teaching, and care coordination on inpatient general medicine rotations, inpatient and outpatient electives, and continuity clinic.
- PGY-3 Year: Consolidating patient care and teaching skills on inpatient medicine, ICU teams, and general medicine consults, with flexible blocks for subspecialty rotations, continuity clinic, and fellowship/job applications.

Didactics
In addition to clinical training, the program offers:
- Morning Report: Daily resident-led sessions for clinical reasoning and socialization.
- Noon conference: Weekly high-yield teaching from faculty and chief residents.
- Department of Medicine Grand Rounds: Presented weekly at the medical school.
- Wednesday School: An academic day with ambulatory didactics, QI projects, journal clubs, resident-as-teacher workshops, simulation sessions, and procedure training.
- Intern Bootcamp: An annual day-long event for PGY1s to discuss common clinical scenarios and practice core skills.
- Upper-Level Boot Camp: An annual half-day of workshops for end-of-year PGY1s to prepare for clinical leadership and team management roles.
Mentorship
Each resident works one-on-one with a dedicated faculty advisor to review milestone-based evaluations, discuss career planning, and develop goals.
Innovative Educational Programs
The program includes:
- Distinguished Educator Pathway: A certificate of distinction in medical education for residents interested in teaching.
- Longitudinal Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Curriculum: A year-long course teaching internal medicine-focused POCUS skills.
- Cardiology Boot Camp: An annual day-long workshop teaching important cardiology topics.
Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Curriculum
The program places great emphasis on quality improvement and patient safety training, exceeding ACGME requirements. It includes a comprehensive QI curriculum, longitudinal course for PGY-2 residents, and participation in hospital committees focusing on systems-based practices. Residents may also choose to do a QI project as part of a month-long research elective.
