The Chemielaborant*in program is a three-year training program that takes place in the laboratories of the Department of Chemistry and Pharmacy at the University of Münster. The program combines theoretical and practical training, providing students with a comprehensive education in chemistry and laboratory techniques.
Job Description
As a Chemielaborant*in, you will work in a team with specialists and students, analyzing and synthesizing substances and physical quantities. After a two-week introductory phase, you will be introduced to the analysis of substances and physical quantities, learning to purify, identify, and characterize them. You will also have the opportunity to work with modern analytical instruments, such as NMR, and develop your handcraft skills.
Training Stations and Content

- Analysis of substances and physical quantities
- Planning of experimental procedures
- Setup of various apparatuses
- Implementation of preparative measures
- Work with modern analytical instruments, such as NMR
- Participation in overarching practical training sessions to learn about other natural science areas, such as microbiology
Requirements
To be eligible for the program, you should have:
- A good secondary school diploma, with grades in mathematics and German, as well as in natural science subjects, indicating a recognizable interest in the training profession
- Technical understanding and skill, which will facilitate your work with various analytical instruments
- Well-developed social skills, which will enrich daily communication and cooperation in a heterogeneous team
- Initiative and willingness to work on new, complex problems, which will help you to develop connections and think creatively
Training Institutions and Theoretical Training
The practical training takes place in the laboratories of the Department of Chemistry and Pharmacy. You will also have the opportunity to work in other training institutions for 4-6 weeks. The theoretical training is provided in three blocks of four to six weeks per year at the Hans-Böckler-Berufskolleg in Münster. Additionally, you will receive weekly practical, company-internal instruction at the University of Münster.
Duration of Training and Shortening Options
The training program lasts three years. However, it is possible to shorten the program to 2.5 years for trainees with a higher education entrance qualification or particularly good performance during the training and in the vocational school.
