Program Overview
Master's Program in Geophysics
The research-oriented MSc program in Geophysics primarily covers content from the areas of Geodynamics, Seismology, and Applied Geophysics, reflecting the research focus of the institute. Master's theses are typically prepared in one of these topics, resulting in a close link between teaching and research. The standard study period is 4 semesters.
Study Content:
1. Study Year (Lecture Phase)
- Dynamik, Evolution, and Simulation of Geophysical Systems | 12.5 LP | 21%
- Advanced Methods for Exploring the Earth's Interior | 12.5 LP | 21%
- Advanced Methods of Applied Geophysics | 13 LP | 22%
- Elective and Interdisciplinary Studies | 22 LP | 37%
2. Study Year (Research Phase)
- Project Planning and Master's Thesis | 60 LP | 100%
Admission Procedure:
The program is open to admission, but applicants must demonstrate sufficient prior knowledge (see below). Enrollment is possible at the start of each semester. An online application is mandatory.
Requirements:
The prerequisite for admission to the Master's program in Geophysics is a relevant academic background with a standard study period of at least 6 semesters in Geophysics, Physics, Meteorology, or a related field with a predominantly mathematical/physical orientation, completed with a grade of at least "satisfactory" (or an ECTS grade of at least "C"). Applicants' knowledge in Geophysics, Physics, and Mathematics should largely cover the content of the Bachelor's program in Geophysics offered in Münster. Another requirement is sufficient English language skills (CEFR Level B2 or equivalent).
If the existing prior knowledge is not fully equivalent to the content of the BSc program in Geophysics at WWU, admission may be granted with the obligation to complete additional courses. This possibility exists, in particular, for graduates with insufficient prior knowledge in Geophysics, such as those with a Bachelor's degree in Physics. Since the required additional courses typically include events from the German-language BSc program in Geophysics, sufficient German language skills are required in this case.
Application Periods and Deadlines:
Detailed information on application periods and deadlines can be found in the official university resources.
