Program Overview

Introduction to the Chemistry License Program

The Chemistry License program at Sorbonne Université aims to provide students with a solid foundation in chemistry, enabling them to pursue various master's programs or careers in teaching. The program focuses on acquiring theoretical knowledge and practical skills in chemistry, as well as developing competencies in related disciplines such as physics, life sciences, and earth sciences.

Program Structure

The Chemistry License program is based on a major-minor system, allowing students to associate the chemistry major with a minor in another scientific discipline or a transdisciplinary thematic minor. The program offers several tracks, including:

  • Monodisciplinary track: This track is designed for students who wish to pursue a master's degree in chemistry. It reinforces experimental skills and provides an opening to other areas of chemistry, particularly in the industrial world.
  • Monodisciplinary track in apprenticeship: This track combines the chemistry major with a minor in "Chemical Analysis and Data Analysis" and leads to a general chemistry license. It includes a professional immersion between the second and third years, followed by an alternation between university and enterprise in the third year.
  • Bi-disciplinary track: This track allows students to associate the chemistry major with a minor in another discipline, enabling them to acquire two cultural backgrounds. Students can choose from various minors, including physics, earth sciences, and life sciences.
  • Bi-disciplinary intensive track: This track is designed for students who wish to pursue a double degree in two disciplines. It leads to the obtention of two licenses and allows students to access master's programs in both disciplines.
  • Mineure Chimie: Students can also enroll in a bi-disciplinary track where chemistry is the minor discipline. This track enables students to acquire a solid foundation in chemistry while pursuing a major in another discipline.

Curriculum

The curriculum for each track is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of chemistry and its applications. The courses include:

  • L2 (Second Year):
    • Chemistry organic 1
    • Spectroscopies
    • Liaisons intramoléculaires and réactivité
    • Outils and méthodes mathématiques
    • Mineure disciplinaire or mineure TT
  • L3 (Third Year):
    • Mécanique quantique and spectroscopies
    • Matériaux inorganiques: synthčses, propriétés, cristallographie, and diffraction
    • Anglais
    • Orientation and insertion professionnelle
    • Mineure disciplinaire or mineure TT

Admission Criteria

Admission to the Chemistry License program is based on the student's academic record and performance in the first year of university studies. Students who have completed the first year of university studies at Sorbonne Université can enter the program directly. Students from other universities can apply for admission, and their application will be reviewed by a committee.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Chemistry License program can pursue various career paths, including:

  • Master's programs in chemistry: Graduates can pursue master's programs in chemistry, leading to careers in research, industry, or teaching.
  • Other master's programs: Graduates can also pursue master's programs in related fields, such as physics, earth sciences, or life sciences.
  • Engineering schools: Graduates can apply to engineering schools, leading to careers in industry or research.
  • Teaching careers: Graduates can pursue teaching careers, particularly in physics-chemistry.

Skills and Competencies

The Chemistry License program aims to develop the following skills and competencies in students:

  • Disciplinary competencies:
    • Ability to design and conduct experiments
    • Ability to analyze and interpret data
    • Ability to use theoretical models to understand experimental results
    • Ability to present results in writing and orally
  • Transversal competencies:
    • Ability to read, write, and speak English
    • Ability to search for information, analyze, and synthesize
    • Ability to self-evaluate

Conclusion

The Chemistry License program at Sorbonne Université provides students with a comprehensive education in chemistry, enabling them to pursue various career paths in research, industry, or teaching. The program's flexible structure and diverse tracks allow students to tailor their education to their interests and career goals.
