Program Overview

Introduction to the Program

The Licence Professionnelle Chimie et Physique des Mat廨iaux is a professional training program offered in partnership with the 丱ole Technique Sup廨ieure du Laboratoire (ETSL). This apprenticeship-based program aims to train high-level technicians in materials science, focusing on the fundamental concepts of chemistry and physics necessary for the development, implementation, characterization, and understanding of material properties.

Program Objectives

The primary objective of this program is to ensure professional integration upon completion. It prepares students for roles as senior technicians or assistant engineers in various industrial sectors, including chemical, automotive, aerospace, railway, nuclear, rubber, and metallurgy, in research and development or production.

Program Structure

The training is conducted in alternation, with 30 ECTS per semester, and includes approximately 4 months of theoretical, practical, and finalized teachings, divided into 4 periods in a university setting. Students spend a minimum of 30 weeks in a company, with periods in the company lasting at least one month or longer (2 months at the beginning of the training and 3 to 4 months from the end of May), allowing apprentices to acquire quality professional experience.

First Semester

  • UE 1: Introduction to Chemistry and Physics of Materials
    • Review of fundamentals in applied chemistry to materials
    • Description and properties of major material families | 30h | 3 ECTS
  • UE 2: Elaboration and Properties of Materials
    • Elaboration of metals, metal alloys, organic materials, minerals, and composites | 60h | 9 ECTS
  • UE 3: Overview of Material Characterization Methods
    • Imaging by Electron Microscopy (MET, MEB)
    • Microstructural analysis of matter (DRX)
    • Spectroscopic analyses (RMN, IR, UV-Vis...) | 60h | 9 ECTS
  • UE 4: Tutored Project The tutored project takes place in a company under the responsibility of the apprenticeship master. | 150h | 9 ECTS

Second Semester

  • UE 5: Surface Interaction of Materials
    • Surface treatment and tribology
    • Specific characterization techniques
    • Corrosion
    • Material databases | 60h | 6 ECTS
  • UE 6: Elaboration and Properties of Materials
    • Physico-chemical and mechanical properties of materials | 60h | 6 ECTS
  • Two Specialization Paths:
    • UE7M: Failure Analysis and Expertise of Metallic Materials
      • In-depth study of the mechanical properties of metallic materials
      • Fractography and examination of broken parts
      • Non-destructive testing of materials, heat treatment, hardening methods
      • Metal and alloy forming techniques
    • UE7P: Plastics, Composites, and Nanomaterials
      • Macromolecular synthesis, physics-chemistry of polymers
      • Mechanical properties: elastomers, thermoplastics, and composites - Transformation of thermoplastics
      • Composites and nanocomposites
      • Nanomaterials, synthesis, and properties, in-depth study
      • Elaboration and properties of materials in the form of coatings | 90h | 6 ECTS
  • UE 8: Training for the Company
    • Practice of the English language, TOEIC (30h)
    • Communication (30h)
    • Hygiene, Safety, Environment, Quality (30h) | 90h | 3 ECTS
  • UE 9: Apprenticeship in a Company | 30 weeks | 9 ECTS

Skills and Competencies

Professional Competencies

The future senior technician or assistant engineer must be able to elaborate and/or characterize a material while respecting a specification sheet. They must be capable of choosing the appropriate chemical approach and processes to achieve the objective (application/property/structure and morphology).

Transversal Competencies

  • Know how to synthesize and write up results in the form of a written report
  • Know how to present results orally

Target Audience

The training is aimed at students under 30 years old holding a BTS, BTSA, DUT, DEUST, or a L2 level (120 ECTS) in the LMD curriculum, but also those who, after a general license (L3), want to reorient themselves towards an alternating course for faster professional integration.

This training is also accessible to employees in continuing education.

Admission

The selection of candidates is done in several stages. First, a pedagogical evaluation of the candidates' files deposited on the AFI24 site (CV, cover letter, post-bac transcripts) is carried out by the pedagogical managers. Selected candidates are invited to a motivational interview.

The interview takes place in the presence of teachers, professionals, and AFI24 mission managers. During this interview, the candidate's motivations and ability to integrate into a company are primarily evaluated (Presentation - personality / Dynamism-confidence / communication - oral expression / Motivation - professional project).

Following the interviews, a mandatory "job search technique" meeting is ensured by the AFI24 mission manager.

Candidates admitted after the interview are definitively admitted to the training once the apprenticeship contract is signed with the company.
