Program Overview

Master's Program in Physics - Paris Physics Master Track

The Paris Physics Master is a new Master's track in Physics taught in English, supported by two universities in Paris: Sorbonne Universitķ and Universitķ Paris Citķ. The first year proposes a demanding and broad formation in fundamental, experimental, and numerical physics. All the main topics of physics are addressed during the first year.

Program Structure

  • The program is divided into two semesters.
  • Each semester offers a range of courses that cover various aspects of physics.

First Semester Courses

  • Quantum Mechanics (MU4PYA01): Acquire the basics of advanced mechanics with a twist towards modern topics such as quantum computation.
    • Prerequisites: At least an introductory BSc level course in Quantum Mechanics.
  • Statistical Physics (MU4PYA02): Basic conceptual aspects of statistical physics and applications.
    • Prerequisites: Mandatory - Calculus, Newtonian mechanics, Basics of thermodynamics. Useful - Basics of analytical mechanics, Elements of probability theory, Basics of quantum mechanics.
  • Numerical Methods for Physics (MU4PYA03): Acquire a basic knowledge of computational methods to solve physics problems.
    • Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of computer programming, some knowledge of Python would be useful.
  • Macroscopic Complex Systems (MU4PYA04): Study of complex fluids based on microscopic and macroscopic points of view.
    • Prerequisites: Calculus, Vector operators, Newtonian mechanics, Basics of electrostatics. Useful - Basics of statistical thermodynamics.
  • Physicists Tournament (MU4PYA05):
    • No prerequisites or description provided.

Second Semester Courses

  • Nuclear Particle Physics (MU4PYA08): Introductory and basic knowledge of the theory of nuclear and particle physics.
    • Prerequisites: Good level in quantum mechanics, special relativity.
  • Astrophysics Cosmology (MU4PYA09): Introduction to astrophysics and cosmology.
    • Prerequisites: General Physics - classical mechanics, thermodynamics, basic fluid mechanics, quantum physics, statistical physics.
  • Atom Molecular Physics (MU4PYA10): Basic knowledge for understanding the structure and properties of isolated atoms and molecules.
    • Prerequisites: Quantum Mechanics - Hamiltonian, Eigenvalues and Eigenstates, Angular Momentum Coupling, Particle in a central Field, Time-Independent Perturbation Theory, Identical Particles.
  • Condensed Matter (MU4PYA11): Link between microscopic properties of solids and macroscopic physical phenomena.
    • Prerequisites: Quantum physics - Schr÷dinger equation, vector spaces, harmonic oscillator. Statistical physics - Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein distributions.
  • Advanced Quantum Mechanics 2 (MU4PYA13):
    • No prerequisites or description provided.

Additional Information

  • The courses are accessible to 4th year undergraduate exchange students provided they have the necessary prerequisites.
  • All courses are taught in English, with an English level requirement of B2, and no test is required.
  • The program offers a comprehensive education in physics, preparing students for advanced research or professional careers.
