Program Overview


MASTER Histoire : Armees, guerres et securite dans les societes de l'Antiquite a nos jours

Presentation

The history of defense and security is one of the areas of excellence of the Faculty of Letters at Sorbonne University, which benefits from the university's relationships with the military and security services. The originality of this curriculum is based on several characteristics:


  • An opening to all armies and the Gendarmerie, as well as to other military institutions and the National Police.
  • The study of defense and security policies and doctrines, practices and operations, but also personnel, equipment, and representations.
  • An expansion of perspectives to the continuities between defense, internal security, intelligence, and diplomacy.
  • A link with the new Institute of the Sea at Sorbonne University.
  • A participation of the four periods of history, symbolized by an annual M2 seminar on the History of Conflicts.

The level of study aimed for is BAC + 5 and above.


ECTS

The program corresponds to 120 ECTS credits.


Savoir-faire et competences

The program aims to provide students with the following skills and knowledge:


  • Knowledge of the history of armed forces and police, as well as the phenomenon of war and security issues.
  • Mastery of historical keys to analyze the phenomenon of war in time and its inscription in space.
  • Understanding of the interrelations between defense, international relations, intelligence, internal security, economy, political systems, religions, and cultures.
  • Acquisition of the skills of a master's degree in history, including the collection and exploitation of diverse sources, writing and defense of a thesis, mastery of a foreign language, and communication skills.

Dimension internationale

Two devices are available: bilateral agreements and Erasmus. French students can go abroad to study a subject related to the history of other European countries, Canada, or the United States. Short missions to exploit archives in a foreign country can be funded. Foreign students come to the Faculty of Letters at Sorbonne University to study a subject related to the history of France or another country.

Organisation

The program is organized into two years: M1 and M2. Each year is divided into two semesters.


Programme

The program consists of Unites d'Enseignements (UE) distributed over the four semesters. A UE is composed of one or several Elements Constitutifs (EC). Each UE is assigned a number of ECTS credits.


M1 Histoire : Armees, guerres et securite

The M1 program includes the following UE:


  • UE1 Enseignements disciplinaires (8 credits)
  • UE2 Seminaire methodologique commun (5 credits)
  • UE3 Langue vivante (2 credits)
  • UE4 Seminaire du Directeur de Recherche (15 credits)

M2 Histoire : Armees, guerres et securite

The M2 program includes the following UE:

Admission

Admission to the program requires a license in History or an equivalent degree. The agreement of a thesis director on a subject is a prerequisite for the administrative registration procedure.

To be eligible for the program, students must hold a license in History.
