Program Overview

Introduction to the DIU Anesthésie et Réanimation du Patient Âgé Program

The DIU Anesthésie et Réanimation du Patient Âgé is a university diploma program offered by the Faculté de Santé of Sorbonne Université. This program is designed to teach the specificities of anesthesia and resuscitation to geriatricians, and the specificities of the elderly to emergency physicians, anesthetists, and resuscitators.

Objectives

The primary objective of this program is to provide healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage the anesthesia and resuscitation of elderly patients. The program aims to facilitate interactions between different specialties and address ethical issues related to the care of elderly patients.

Public and Prerequisites

The program is intended for medical doctors who have completed their medical studies and are interested in taking care of elderly patients. The selection of students is based on their curriculum vitae and a letter of motivation, which may be complemented by letters of support from their supervisors.

Program Structure

The program consists of 96 hours of training, divided into three modules, each lasting 4 to 5 sessions. The program is offered over a period of one academic year, from November to June. The teaching methods include theoretical courses, virtual classes, and two face-to-face meetings with experts.

Modules

The program is divided into three modules:

  • Module 1: Introduction to anesthesia and resuscitation in the elderly
  • Module 2: Specificities of anesthesia and resuscitation in the elderly
  • Module 3: Ethical issues and interactions between specialties

Assessment Methods

The assessment methods include a continuous assessment via the e-learning platform and a written exam at the end of each module. The exams consist of short open-ended questions.

Validation

To be declared admitted, the candidate must have attended all the courses and at least one of the two face-to-face meetings with experts, and must obtain an average grade of at least 10/20 on the three modules.

Failure Procedures

In case of failure, a catch-up session is planned, and the student is allowed to re-enroll subsequently without keeping the benefit of any previously acquired modules.

Responsible Persons

The program is directed by Pr Hélčne Vallet, a professor of geriatrics and internal medicine at the Faculté de Santé of Sorbonne Université.

Associated Formations

The DIU Anesthésie et Réanimation du Patient Âgé is associated with other university diploma programs, including the DU Pathologies Digestives en Urgence (PADUR), the DU Pathologies cardiovasculaires de la femme, and the DU immunologie de la reproduction.
