Program Overview
Course Description
The course, Public Relations and Marketing in EMS, is designed to help Emergency Medical Service (EMS) systems develop strategies to navigate challenging environments. It focuses on public relations planning to turn disasters or scandals into opportunities and provides a basic understanding of marketing strategies to offset market pressures and demands.
Course Outline
The online course includes video components, textbook and supplementary readings, and multiple choice quizzes to test knowledge. Graded assessments allow students to apply module learnings to their emergency medical services environment. The course is divided into four parts:
- Part One: Overview of Marketing and Public Relations Concepts: Introduction to basic principles, concepts, and theoretical models of public relations and marketing.
- Part Two: Marketing within the Health Care setting: Examination of how typical marketing models, principles, and concepts can be modified for successful application in the EMS field.
- Part Three: Public Relations and Crisis Communications for Health Care: Application of public relations models and concepts as crisis communication strategies within healthcare settings, using a case study approach.
- Part Four: Analysis & Application of Marketing and Public Relations for Health Care: Focus on applying the combination of marketing and public relations strategies to create effective health campaigns, with the opportunity to develop a social marketing campaign for a healthcare setting or organization.
What You Will Learn
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
- Learn basic concepts of public relations and marketing.
- Distinguish the differences between public relations and marketing.
- Appreciate how marketing strategies vary when designed for the public good or a public service.
- Develop a marketing plan specific to the emergency health service system of their choice.
- Develop and evaluate an emergency health services public relations plan.
- Facilitate a collaborative activity between the emergency health organization of their choice and some of its stakeholders.
Notes
This course is offered by Dalhousie University's School of Health Administration through OpenCredit, a program that allows people to complete for-credit courses without enrolling in a degree program. Students are expected to abide by all Dalhousie University policies and will have access to academic services, including library access, writing centre, and student success centres. Upon successful completion, students will receive a Record of Achievement indicating their grade and the number of credit hours achieved.
