Program Overview


Introduction to the JD/MHA Program

The JD/MHA program is a collaborative effort between the Schulich School of Law and the School of Health Administration at Dalhousie University. This combined degree program enables students to select classes leading to the degrees of Juris Doctor and Master of Health Administration.


Program Overview

The four-year JD/MHA program consists of the following structure:


  • Year 1: First year of the MHA program
    • Summer: HESA 6390 - Health Administration Residency
  • Year 2: First year of the JD program
  • Year 3:
    • MHA: Students must complete the following courses in the HMA program: HESA 6100.03, HESA 6305.03, HESA 6310.03, HESA 6340.03, HESA 6365.03
    • JD: Students must complete 23-25 credit hours, including LAWS 2361.025, LAWS 2362.025, LAWS 2062.05, LAWS 2311.005, LAWS 2321.005, and 12-14 credit hours of JD courses (inclusive of a major paper course)
  • Year 4:
    • HESA 6360.03: Healthcare Law, or LAWS 2132.03: Health Law (if not completed previously)
    • LAWS 2099.02 and 21-23 credit hours of JD electives (inclusive of major paper course)

Entry Requirements

To gain acceptance onto this combined degree program, students must satisfy the entrance requirements of both the JD program and the School of Health Administration's Master of Health Administration (MHA) program. Students must apply to both the School of Health Administration and the Schulich School of Law individually. Students applying for the MHA program may submit LSAT results in lieu of GMAT results.


Program Structure

The first and second years of the program may be done in reverse order. The program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in both law and health administration, preparing them for careers in healthcare law, policy, and administration.
