Program Overview

Dalhousie University

School of Physiotherapy

The School of Physiotherapy is part of the Faculty of Health at Dalhousie University.

MSc Physiotherapy Program

The MSc PT curriculum is organized over a period of 28 months (7 terms), beginning in September and ending with the fall term in Year 3. During this time, students are immersed in a learning environment that includes both academic (on-campus) and clinical education (placements in Atlantic Canada) courses. The faculty and clinical preceptors are dedicated to the education of physiotherapy in the region.

Curriculum Structure

The MSc PT curriculum contains coursework in all three fall, winter, and spring/summer terms and follows the academic calendar of the university.

Clinical Placements

The School has professional connections in Ireland, Scotland, Norway, and India, where eligible students can go on clinical placements. Clinical placements provide for the integration and application of learning in a clinical environment, leading to the development of clinical competencies in each area of practice:

  • Cardiorespiratory (C/R)
  • Musculoskeletal (MSK)
  • Neuroscience

Financial Assistance

All students are responsible for paying travel and living costs associated with clinical placements. Some students may be eligible for travel and accommodation support through the Study/Work International Fund (SWIF) financial assistance.

Program Details

The program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in physiotherapy, including both academic and clinical components. The curriculum is structured to provide students with a strong foundation in the principles and practices of physiotherapy, as well as the opportunity to develop specialized skills and knowledge in specific areas of practice.

Research Areas

The School of Physiotherapy is involved in various research areas, including rehabilitation research. Students in the MSc PT program may have the opportunity to participate in research projects and collaborate with faculty members on research initiatives.

Combined Programs

The School of Physiotherapy also offers a Combined MScPT-Rehabilitation Research program, which allows students to pursue both a master's degree in physiotherapy and a specialization in rehabilitation research. Additionally, the school offers an MSc (Rehabilitation Research) program for students who wish to pursue a research-focused degree.
