Graduate Diploma in Public Administration
The Graduate Diploma in Public Administration (GDPA) is a 1-year graduate credential designed to advance public administration expertise. It is an alternative to the Master of Public Administration (MPA) and is designed for those with experience in the public sector who wish to better understand key principles and concepts of the profession.
Program Overview
The GDPA program combines the essential components of financial, economic, and policy analysis with organization and management theory. Students will develop a valuable skill set and deepen their knowledge through a program that focuses on the essential components of public administration.
Application Process
To apply for the GDPA program, students must follow a series of steps:
- Complete the online application and pay the application fee.
- Submit supporting documents, including transcripts, reference letters, resume/CV, statement of intent, and test scores (if required).
Supporting Documents
The following supporting documents are required:
- Transcripts: Applicants must hold a four-year bachelor's degree (or equivalent) from an institution recognized by Dalhousie University, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 (B) on a 4.3 scale in the last two years of study.
- Reference letters: A minimum of two academic references are required, although applicants may also submit one or two professional references.
- Resume/CV: A CV/Resume that summarizes academic and professional achievements, work experiences, and any other relevant information.
- Statement of intent: A 2-3 page, double-spaced essay discussing career goals, strengths, and what it means to be an ethical public servant.
- Tests/test scores: Minimum IELTS overall score of 7 or minimum TOEFL score of 92, although this may be waived if the applicant has completed a degree from a recognized university where the language of instruction is English.
Program and Course Details
The GDPA program is a flexible program that can be completed full-time or part-time. Students must complete 27 credit hours (equivalent to nine 3-credit hour courses) to earn the Graduate Diploma in Public Administration.
- Core courses: 18 credit hours from required courses, including Government Structure and Organization, Introduction to Public Policy, Applied Economics, Quantitative Methods, Human Resource Management, and Strategic Financial Management.
- Elective courses: 9 credit hours from graduate-level electives, with the option to take one elective outside the PUAD series (subject to approval).
