Program Overview


Introduction to the Liver/Gastrointestinal Pathology Fellowship

The Liver/Gastrointestinal Pathology Fellowship is a one-year post-graduate program offered by Nova Scotia Health, based at the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. This adult, tertiary/quaternary centre performs over 40 liver transplants and receives more than 400 in-house liver specimens, approximately 450 liver consultations, around 15,000 in-house gastrointestinal and pancreatic specimens, and over 1,000 gastrointestinal and pancreatic consultations per year. The program is staffed by 5 gastrointestinal and liver subspecialty pathologists.


Program Description

The candidate will gain in-depth exposure and comprehensive training in gastrointestinal and liver pathology, as well as relevant molecular pathology. The proportion of liver to gastrointestinal exposure can be tailored to the candidate's interests and career plans. The fellow will participate in pathologic diagnosis, grossing, clinicopathologic rounds including tumour boards, divisional and departmental conferences, transplant liver call (1 week/month), supervision of residents and medical students, and teaching. They will be expected to complete a scholarly project suitable for peer-reviewed publication. Opportunity for independent sign-out will be provided.


Required Qualifications

  • MD or equivalent degree
    • Completion of a pathology residency program
    • Eligible/certified in Diagnostic & Molecular Pathology or Diagnostic & Clinical Pathology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
    • Must hold or be eligible for a full physician license from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia

Stipends

  • Locum work in gastrointestinal pathology, which will be incorporated into the training, will be available to assemble a salary commensurate with the level of post-graduate training. Partial or complete external funding is welcomed.
  • 10 days of conference & 20 days of off-site vacation, in addition to all hospital-recognized holidays and 3 days off over the December break.
