Program Overview
Introduction to the Subspecialty Residency Training Program
The Division of Hematology at Dalhousie University offers a comprehensive two-year subspecialty training program for residents. This program is accredited by the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada and provides extensive exposure to a variety of conditions in benign and malignant hematology.
Program Overview
The program includes:
- Weekly academic half-day
- Weekly grand rounds
- Weekly tumour board
- Weekly microscopy sessions
- Monthly journal club
Residents will have ample opportunity to pursue their clinical and research interests, participate in joint academic half-day sessions, and engage in a robust laboratory rotation. Faculty members with specialized interests and expertise in various areas, including:
- Venous thromboembolism and anticoagulation
- Blood and marrow transplantation
- Lymphoma
- Leukemia
- Myeloma
- Bleeding disorders will be accessible throughout the program.
Curriculum
The subspecialty training program includes:
- 6 haematopathology rotations
- 4 research rotations
- 2 stem cell transplant rotations
- 4 general haematology ward rotations
- 2 inpatient consultation rotations
- 2 ambulatory care rotations
- 2 thrombosis/haemostasis rotations
- 1 paediatric haematology rotation
- 1 medical oncology rotation
- 2 elective rotations Each rotation is four weeks in duration.
Training Sites
The program's training sites include the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre, a multi-facility tertiary and quaternary health sciences centre, with its two principal sites being the Halifax Infirmary and the Victoria General. The IWK Health Centre also serves as a training site for rotations in pediatric hematology and maternal-fetal medicine.
