Program Overview


Introduction to the Subspecialty Residency Training Program

The Division of Hematology at Dalhousie University offers a comprehensive two-year subspecialty training program for residents. This program is accredited by the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada and provides extensive exposure to a variety of conditions in benign and malignant hematology.


Program Overview

The program includes:


  • Weekly academic half-day
  • Weekly grand rounds
  • Weekly tumour board
  • Weekly microscopy sessions
  • Monthly journal club Residents will have ample opportunity to pursue their clinical and research interests, participate in joint academic half-day sessions, and engage in a robust laboratory rotation. Faculty members with specialized interests and expertise in various areas, including:
    • Venous thromboembolism and anticoagulation
    • Blood and marrow transplantation
    • Lymphoma
    • Leukemia
    • Myeloma
    • Bleeding disorders will be accessible throughout the program.

Curriculum

The subspecialty training program includes:


  • 6 haematopathology rotations
  • 4 research rotations
  • 2 stem cell transplant rotations
  • 4 general haematology ward rotations
  • 2 inpatient consultation rotations
  • 2 ambulatory care rotations
  • 2 thrombosis/haemostasis rotations
  • 1 paediatric haematology rotation
  • 1 medical oncology rotation
  • 2 elective rotations Each rotation is four weeks in duration.

Training Sites

The program's training sites include the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre, a multi-facility tertiary and quaternary health sciences centre, with its two principal sites being the Halifax Infirmary and the Victoria General. The IWK Health Centre also serves as a training site for rotations in pediatric hematology and maternal-fetal medicine.
