Program Overview
Course Description
The course is 16 learning hours, which accounts for all assignments and examinations, but does not take into account the total number of study hours. This course focuses on the roofing components of a residential dwelling, including roof coverings, roof drainage systems, flashings, and roof penetrations. Students will learn to identify common problems that apply to each roofing component, as well as the causes and implications of each problem.
Course Outline
The course consists of the following weeks:
- Weeks 1-5: Steep Roofing
- Week 5: Mid-term Examination
- Week 6: Steep Roofing Continued
- Weeks 7-9: Steep Roof Flashings
- Weeks 10-11: Flat Roofing
- Week 12: Final Examination
What You Will Learn
Students will learn to:
- Inspect the types, materials, conditions, safety concerns, and other issues regarding roof coverings, roof drainage systems, flashings, and roof penetrations
- Identify the common problems that apply to each roofing component, as well as the causes and implications of each problem
- Describe the inspection procedures involved with each component
- Define and use proper terminology related to roofing
Notes
By enrolling in this course, students will be automatically enrolled in the Certificate in Home Inspection. The Faculty of Open Learning and Career Development recommends an intermediate level of English language proficiency for the most effective learning and participation in online and face-to-face courses.

Instructor Biography
Kevin Green is a Professional Engineer and has been a home inspector since 2005. He spent 4 years working for Carson Dunlop as a home inspector and in 2009 branched out and started his own company. Kevin is a Registered Home Inspector (RHI) through the Ontario Association of Home Inspectors (OAHI) and is a National Certificate Holder through the Canadian Association of Home and Property Inspectors (CAHPI). He is also a Level I Thermographer and a Certified Energy Advisor.
