Program Overview
The Art of Gardening- Atlantic is a Master Gardener course offered by the Faculty of Agriculture, Extended Learning. This online, self-paced course allows students to work at their own pace and complete all assignments and quizzes within nine months.
Course Description
The Art of Gardening is designed to merge students' gardening experience with the knowledge they have acquired throughout the program. The course explores specialist areas of gardening, including container plantings, lawn care, and the cultivation of fruits and vegetables.

Marking Scheme
The course is assessed through a combination of assignments and quizzes, with a total of 100 marks allocated as follows:
- Assignment 1: Designing a Patio Planter (10 marks)
- Quiz 1 (15 marks)
- Assignment 2: Lawn Care (10 marks)
- Quiz 2 (15 marks)
- Assignment 3: Fruit Gardens (10 marks)
- Quiz 3 (15 marks)
- Assignment 4: Vegetable Gardens (10 marks)
- Quiz 4 (15 marks)
Requirements for Successful Completion
To successfully complete the course, students must achieve a passing grade of 60% in each of the four sections.
Technical Requirements
Students require a reliable computer or laptop device with internet access (high-speed preferred) and basic knowledge of Microsoft Word for submitting assignments.
Course Dates
All courses open on October 1st and close on July 31st. Students are expected to take one course at a time, unless otherwise approved by Extended Learning.
Refunds
Course refunds are eligible up to two weeks after registering for the course, with a non-refundable administrative fee of $50.00. After this period, there are no course refunds.

- Maintaining the Garden
- Plant ID and Use
- The Art of Gardening

The course instructor is Carol Goodwin, faculty advisor for the Master Gardener program and retired Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Science at Dalhousie University Faculty of Agriculture.
