Program Overview
The program in Geotechnical Engineering and Building Materials is the first of its kind in Egyptian universities. It was established in 2025 as a special program with tuition fees within the College of Science at Sohag University. Geotechnical engineering is the link between geology and civil engineering, or the practical application of geology in civil engineering, particularly in relation to the properties of different soils and the suitability of building materials.
Program Description
The program is considered one of the most important specialties, heavily relied upon by the civil engineering sector in the design and construction of facilities and infrastructure in all its forms. The program is essential for meeting the needs of society and the job market in the field of geotechnical engineering and building materials, and for providing highly qualified specialists who can keep up with the development of modern technologies in geotechnical engineering and building materials through an advanced scientific approach that combines theoretical and practical aspects.
Competitive Advantages
- Meets the needs of society and the job market in the field of geotechnical engineering and building materials.
- Rarity of similar programs.
- The program organizes many geological and field trips, in addition to visiting work sites of specialized companies.
- Mastery of the study of natural, mechanical, and mineral properties of various types of rocks in the field of geotechnical engineering and building materials, and their optimal management and exploitation.
- Application of modeling techniques in the field of geotechnical engineering and building materials, and how to solve related problems.
- Evaluation of raw materials and rock units that are suitable as building materials (cement industry, concrete, asphalt, red bricks, ceramics, etc.).
- Periodic assessment of geological hazards and issuance of bulletins on how to deal with them before, during, and after their occurrence.
- The program provides all students, after completing the third level, with practical training in one of the specialized companies in the field of research, exploration, and extraction of raw materials, to refine the students' practical skills and qualify them to compete in the job market.
- Some companies provide real data and information about engineering studies and building materials around the world for fourth-level students to use in completing their graduation projects.
Admission Requirements
- The student must have a high school diploma (Science or Mathematics) or its equivalent, and Arab and foreign certificates equivalent to it, according to the admission requirements set by the Supreme Council of Universities.
- The college council may also accept transferred students with the conditions of registration and transfer applied to Egyptians, and additional conditions proposed by the college council and approved by the university council and adopted by the Supreme Council of Universities.
- It is permissible to accept the transfer of students enrolled in a similar program in one of the colleges of science in Egyptian or foreign universities, provided that the student meets the college's admission requirements.
Degree and Study System
The study is based on the credit hour system in English, where the student studies 136 credit hours over four years to obtain a Bachelor's degree in Geotechnical Engineering and Building Materials. The credit hours are distributed as follows:
- University requirements: 8 hours (first and second levels).
- College requirements: 28 hours (first level).
- Specialization requirements: 88 hours (from the third level).
- Elective courses: 6 hours (third level).
- Practical training: 3 hours (after passing 90 hours).
- Graduation project: 3 hours (fourth level).
Tuition Fees
The annual tuition fees are: the card fee + 10,000 EGP (in two installments).
Job Opportunities for Graduates
Graduates can work in:
- Ministries such as the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Housing, Ministry of Roads and Bridges, Ministry of Planning, Ministry of Investment, Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
- Local authorities in the quarrying and mining sector.
- Public and private institutions, locally and internationally, in the fields of geotechnical engineering and building materials.
- Construction companies, cement companies, oil companies.
- Companies working in the field of environmental and geological studies.
- Companies engaged in research, exploration, and extraction of raw materials (minerals and economic rocks).
