Geriatrics Nursing Department

Course Description

The Geriatrics Nursing Department at the College of Nursing, Sohag University, offers a comprehensive course in gerontological nursing. The course aims to increase the ability of nurses to work with older people, providing them with the necessary theory and practical skills to deliver optimal care.


Course Objectives

At the end of this course, students will be able to:


  • Describe principles of normal and abnormal human behaviors and interactions
  • Gain knowledge and understanding of normal and abnormal structure and function of the human body
  • Describe etiology, clinical picture, pathogenesis, diagnoses, and complications of common and life-threatening health conditions affecting patients with different age groups

  1. An overview of gerontological nursing
  2. Theories of aging
  3. Age-related changes
  4. Basic needs of elderly people
  5. Nutrition of elderly
  6. Common physiological problems
  7. Psychosocial problems of the elderly
  8. Communication skills
  9. Ethical and legal aspects involved in the care of elderly
  10. Role of gerontological nurse
