Program Overview

Presidential Associates Program

The Presidential Associates Program is a unique opportunity for individuals to work closely with the president of the American University in Cairo. The program provides a monthly living stipend, housing, and other benefits to associates.

Benefits

The program offers several benefits to associates, including:

  • A monthly living stipend to cover expenses in Cairo
  • One economy class round-trip ticket between the associate's hometown and Cairo
  • A settling-in allowance upon arrival
  • Rent-free, furnished apartments owned or leased by AUC
  • Transportation to and from the university through AUC's bus system
  • 60 hours of individual Arabic tutoring per semester
  • Access to AUC facilities and services, including the library, sports center, and clinic
  • Annual and sick leave days
  • Opportunities for travel and sightseeing in Egypt
  • Health insurance options
  • A full waiver of graduate study tuition at AUC upon completion of the program and acceptance as a full-time employee

Stipend

Each associate receives a monthly living stipend to cover expenses in Cairo. The stipend is paid at the end of each month, with the first payment made at the end of September and the last payment made at the end of August of the following year. The stipend is not taxable in the United States, provided the associate remains outside the United States for 330 consecutive days or more.

Housing

Associates live in rent-free, furnished apartments owned or leased by AUC. The apartments are shared with one or two other associates, and each associate has their own bedroom. Transportation to and from the university is available through AUC's bus system.

Arabic Language Study

Associates receive 60 hours of individual Arabic tutoring per semester through AUC's School of Continuing Education. The tutoring hours are scheduled around the associate's work schedule, and associates may also sign up for a student language partner. Additionally, associates have the option to audit another course offered by the university during the spring semester.

Annual/Sick Leave Days

Associates are entitled to 21 annual leave days and 15 sick leave days. Associates are also allowed extra vacation days during the week between Christmas and New Year's Day.

AUC Facilities and Services

Associates have full access to AUC facilities and services, including the library, sports center, clinic, and bus system. The bus system runs between the New Cairo campus and faculty housing, Zamalek, AUC Tahrir Square, Maadi, Dokki, and Mohandiseen.

Monthly Educational Seminar Series

Associates may initiate special seminars with prominent individuals from the public and private sectors, as well as AUC professors and specialists, to facilitate further academic discussion on various political, cultural, and social aspects of Egypt and the Middle East.

Travel and Sightseeing Opportunities

The program has a fund for excursions for associates to explore Cairo and other parts of Egypt throughout the year. The destination and nature of the excursions are determined by the interests of the associates and in discussion with the program coordinator.

Health Insurance

Associates must have an insurance policy that covers medications, analysis, testing, and hospitalization. Associates have the option to subscribe to subsidized medical insurance through AUC or purchase or retain their own insurance plans. Basic medical examination care is provided through the AUC clinic.

Graduate Studies Tuition Waiver

Following completion of the Presidential Associates Program, associates may receive a full waiver of graduate study tuition at AUC, if accepted while enrolling, upon applying for a position and becoming a full-time employee at the university. The associate must be working full-time every semester for their tuition to be waived.
