Program Overview


Entrepreneurial Leadership and Critical Global Issues

The world is facing unprecedented critical issues, including poverty, government accountability and corruption, income inequality, climate change, unemployment, migration, and more recently, the COVID-19 global pandemic. This course will take a close look at global issues through an experiential, entrepreneurial, and leadership lens, developing the ability to think strategically and systematically about different scenarios and how to unpick them innovatively, creatively, and courageously.


Learning Outcomes

  • Understand and analyze the context and the history of entrepreneurship and the entrepreneurship ecosystem in Egypt compared to the world.
  • Investigate leadership theories and connect them to critical global issues. Identify and reflect on key critical global issues, their history, cause, current state, and future state, and possible solutions.
  • Research and critically analyze critical global issues and reflect on the entrepreneurial leadership and changemaker journey.
  • Develop problem-solving, critical thinking, creative inquiry, and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrate self-reflection and awareness, leadership character, tolerance, and respect for others.
  • Undertake research independently and in teams.
  • Advanced critical writing skills encompassing analysis and evaluative judgment.
  • Enhance speaking and listening skills.
  • Evidence the capacity to communicate research clearly, comprehensively, and persuasively.

Duration and Location

  • Sessions will run daily from 9 am - 3 pm
  • AUC New Cairo campus
  • Fridays and Saturdays off

Fees

  • $1,000 (price includes field trips) - This amount is equivalent to half the price of a regular undergraduate course.
  • 10% discount offered for siblings.
  • Egyptian students can pay the equivalent amount in Egyptian pounds.

Current AUC Equivalent

This course is one of the core courses, from among which students of all majors may select. For students interested in start-ups and sustainable development.


Note

Program requirements may change by the time the student applies to AUC. If this course is no longer a requirement for the major, it will be counted as an elective course.


Course Transfer

  • Upon taking this course, you will receive a certificate of completion from AUC.
  • The course is equivalent to 3 credit hours. Only students who pass the course will be able to transfer these 3 credits when they enroll at AUC. In case of transferring the course to other universities, their transfer assessments will apply.

Requirements

  • An English writing sample (at least 750 words): essay or reflection.
  • A copy of your report card for the past two years of school.
  • A recommendation letter from a high-school teacher within the past academic year, if available.

Transportation

The AUC Bus Service is available for extra fees. Details on the schedule will be shared before the program's start date.


Accommodation

Accommodation is offered at the University Residences in case needed.


About the Instructors

Ahmad E Shahin is an adjunct faculty member at The American University in Cairo. He has a diverse teaching portfolio with a specialty in operations management and entrepreneurship. His love for technology reflects on his teaching style, as he utilizes technological resources to interactively engage students in discussions about the recent issues in today's world. His hobbies include reading about developing topics and learning new languages. Shahin holds a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering, two master's degrees; one in finance and the other in business, and is currently working on his PhD in management.

A 100% refund of the program fees will be offered in the following cases, if reported at least three weeks before the program's start date:


  • Course cancellation
  • Medical withdrawal
