Program Structure

The program is structured into four weeks, each focusing on a different aspect of legal skills:

Week 1: Legal Writing in English

This intensive one-week course helps prepare students for internship and practice opportunities in legal settings where the English language is used. The course covers best practices in the customs, styles, structure, and protocols of legal writing in English. Students learn and apply the basic rules of legal drafting, using appropriate language, and organizing and presenting the contents of legal documents.

Week 2: Oral Advocacy

This one-week training focuses on the skills of oral advocacy, as practiced in the courtroom through trials or arguments on motions. Students "learn by doing" through the practice of various oral advocacy skills utilizing simulated legal problems. At the end of this highly interactive training, participants know how to analyze a case and develop a legal theory, understand how to be an effective questioner of witnesses, and be able to make an oral argument at either the trial or appellate level.

Week 3: Accounting for Lawyers

This one-week course introduces concepts of financial reporting, including underlying principles of financial accounting, the elements of financial statements, notes to financial statements, and key accounting standards. The course helps students provide effective advice to clients by gaining an understanding of the financial information that informs management decision-making and is used by external parties to assess the economic condition of an enterprise.

Week 4: Law Practice Management for the New Lawyer

This one-week intensive course identifies and strengthens critical skills needed to transition from the role of law student to legal professional. The course recognizes that the successful practice of law requires more than just an understanding of the substantive law. Fundamentals of time and office management, teamwork, communication theory, leadership development, networking, and client services are discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on creating a supportive and collaborative environment in which new skills may be acquired and honed through interactive exercises.

Conclusion

The Lawyering Practical Skills Program is a comprehensive and interactive program designed to equip law students with the practical skills necessary to succeed in their legal careers. Through its structured weeks focusing on legal writing, oral advocacy, accounting, and law practice management, the program provides a holistic approach to legal education, preparing students for the challenges of the legal profession.
