PhD in Mathematics Program

Program Structure
The program consists of several semesters of coursework, followed by a comprehensive examination and a dissertation. The program can be completed in several semesters, with a minimum of 42 credit hours required.
- First Semester:
Foundation coursework begins, with 9 credit hours of courses, including:

- Elective
- Second Semester:
Continue advanced coursework, with 9 credit hours of courses, including:
- Major Area Course
- Minor Area Course
- Elective
- Third Semester:
Prepare for comprehensive examination, with 9 credit hours of courses, including:
- Major Area Course
- Major Area Course
- Elective
- MATH 699 Seminar
- Fourth Semester:
PhD Candidacy achieved, with 6 credit hours of courses, including:
- Major Area Course
- MATH 711 Pre-Dissertation
- Fifth Semester Onwards: MATH 712 Ph.D. Dissertation, with a status of In Progress (IP)
Comprehensive Examination
The comprehensive examination is a written exam that covers 4 graduate-level courses from Groups I & II. The exam requires a minimum of 70% to pass.
Dissertation
The dissertation is an original research contribution to the field of mathematics. Students work under the supervision of a faculty member to complete their dissertation.
MSc Exit Option
Students who do not pass the comprehensive examination or who choose to exit the program early can complete an MSc in Mathematics by taking an additional 6 credit hours of coursework, including MATH 610 Thesis, for a total of 36 credit hours.
Program Completion
The PhD in Mathematics program is completed when the student has successfully defended their dissertation. The program requires a minimum of 42 credit hours and can be completed in several semesters.
