PSE 102 Chemistry and Thermodynamics I

This course consists of two components: Chemistry and Thermodynamics.

Chemistry Component

The chemistry component covers:

  1. The universe around us, including what chemistry is, atoms, molecules, and ions.
  2. Substances, elements, and mixtures, as well as changes and properties of matter.
  3. Chemistry divisions, including the scientific method, observation, law, hypothesis, experiment, data, results, and theory.
  4. The Periodic Law and Periodic Table, as well as the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC).
  5. The timeline of atomic theories and models, including elementary particles, atomic number, mass number, atomic mass, isotopes, and quantum numbers for different orbitals.
  6. Electron configuration of atoms, valence electrons, and the octet rule.
  7. Periodic Law, Periodic Table, atomic/ionic radius, electron affinity, electronegativity, ionization energy, polarizability, and isoelectronic configurations.
  8. Metals, metalloids, and non-metals, as well as Lewis structures, covalent, ionic, and metallic bonds.
  9. The valence shell electron pair repulsion (VSEPR) theory, polar and nonpolar molecules, and intermolecular interactions.
  10. Gaseous, liquid, and solid states, phase changes, and energy of physical change.

Thermodynamics Component

The thermodynamics component covers:

  1. Fundamentals of thermodynamics.
  2. Work and heat.
  3. The First Law.
  4. Pure substances.
  5. The Second Law.
