PSE 102 Chemistry and Thermodynamics I
This course consists of two components: Chemistry and Thermodynamics.
Chemistry Component
The chemistry component covers:
- The universe around us, including what chemistry is, atoms, molecules, and ions.
- Substances, elements, and mixtures, as well as changes and properties of matter.
- Chemistry divisions, including the scientific method, observation, law, hypothesis, experiment, data, results, and theory.
- The Periodic Law and Periodic Table, as well as the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC).
- The timeline of atomic theories and models, including elementary particles, atomic number, mass number, atomic mass, isotopes, and quantum numbers for different orbitals.
- Electron configuration of atoms, valence electrons, and the octet rule.
- Periodic Law, Periodic Table, atomic/ionic radius, electron affinity, electronegativity, ionization energy, polarizability, and isoelectronic configurations.
- Metals, metalloids, and non-metals, as well as Lewis structures, covalent, ionic, and metallic bonds.
- The valence shell electron pair repulsion (VSEPR) theory, polar and nonpolar molecules, and intermolecular interactions.
- Gaseous, liquid, and solid states, phase changes, and energy of physical change.
Thermodynamics Component
The thermodynamics component covers:
- Fundamentals of thermodynamics.
- Work and heat.
- The First Law.
- Pure substances.
- The Second Law.
