Program Details

Course Description

The course introduces students to the Renaissance, Medieval, and Elizabethan theatres, as well as Shakespeare's background and kinds of plays. It explores the influences on Shakespeare that contributed to his genius.


Course Aims

  1. Read Shakespeare's individual plays.
  2. Discuss the characteristics of drama as a literary genre and a theatrical event.
  3. Examine Elizabethan concepts and the age of the Renaissance.
  4. Analyze the language, techniques, characters, and themes of Shakespearean comedies and tragedies.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Deliver oral presentations about the age, the playwright, or the genre.
  2. Write essays about the assigned plays.
  3. Acquire knowledge of individual Shakespearian plays.
  4. Understand Shakespeare's language, including prose and verse.
  5. Familiarize oneself with Medieval English and Classical (Greek and Roman) heritage.
  6. Recognize the characteristics of Shakespearean comedies and tragedies.
  7. Develop a general knowledge of the intellectual, social, religious, and historical issues of the Renaissance.
