Intensive English Program

The Intensive English Program (IEP) is designed for students who do not meet the minimum required English language proficiency score for admission to English-taught programs at City University Ajman (CUA).

Admission Requirements

All students applying to English-taught programs at CUA are required to meet the minimum English language proficiency through one of the approved academic tests:

  • IELTS (Academic) with a minimum band score of 5.0
  • TOEFL (Paper-Based Test) with a minimum score of 500
  • TOEFL (Interest-Based Test) with a minimum score of 61
  • Or an equivalent score from other Ministry-approved assessments.

Program Structure

For students who do not meet the minimum required score, CUA offers an Intensive English Program (IEP), subject to the following:

  1. Placement in IEP Levels: Applicants who fall short of the required score must enroll in either Level 1 or Level 2 of the IEP, depending on their English language proficiency.
  2. Concurrent Enrollment in General Education Courses: Students enrolled in the IEP may take up to two general education courses concurrently, including:
  • Computer Fundamentals
  • University Mathematics
  • Islamic Culture
  • UAE Studies This structure encourages students to progress academically while working toward achieving the required English proficiency.
  1. Exemption for Arabic-Taught Programs: Students applying to Arabic-taught programs at CUA are exempt from taking any of the aforementioned English language tests and are not subject to the English proficiency requirement.

Program Details

The objective and required score for the IEP may vary from one student to another, depending on the specific requirements of the academic program they have been admitted to, and the curriculum they completed in their high school education. If a student does not obtain the required test score, they may repeat the IEP. However, if they achieve the required score during the program, they may withdraw from the course.
