Master of Arts in Applied Sociology
The Master of Arts in Applied Sociology is a postgraduate program offered by the Department of Sociology at the University of Sharjah. The program aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of theoretical and analytical frameworks in sociology, enabling them to apply their knowledge to social research and policy-making.
Program Overview
The program is designed to achieve the following objectives:
- Enable students to understand the theoretical and analytical frames for social and security phenomena
- Empower students to use applied sociology concepts to better understand the roles of governmental and non-governmental organizations
- Train students to identify and solve social problems using their critical thinking skills
- Train students to design social policy, devise plans and programs, and identify applied fields
- Nurture future leaders in social work
- Develop and support students' initiatives in a variety of areas of social work
- Supply the field with highly trained and qualified leaders
- Qualify students to work in social research and education
Program Structure
The program consists of two tracks: Thesis Track and Comprehensive Exam Track.
- Thesis Track: Students must complete 15 credit hours of compulsory courses and 9 credit hours of elective courses, in addition to a master's thesis (9 hours).
- Comprehensive Exam Track: Students must complete 24 credit hours of compulsory courses, including a research project, and pass a comprehensive exam.

Students can choose from two fields: Crime and Criminal Justice, and Family Counseling and Social Work.
