Introduction
The Department of History and Islamic Civilization is recognized for its pioneering projects in the UAE. It was established the same year the University of Sharjah was inaugurated and was the first to offer a master's degree in history along with its bachelor's degree. The significant role this department is envisaged to play in strengthening the Arab and Muslim identity was emphasized when His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of the Emirate of Sharjah, and President of the University of Sharjah taught here when the department was first established.
The MA History program fulfils the university's vision to serve the local and regional communities and provide them with keen researchers in history and Islamic civilization. The mission of this program is to produce highly qualified graduates equipped with sound knowledge of the field and modern research skills. This will enable them to pursue doctoral programs and meet the needs of the country and the region.
Objectives
- Train researchers in the fields of history and Islamic civilization
- Provide universities and research institutes in the country and the region with highly skilled researchers
- Preserve the Arab and Islamic identity through scientific studies that highlight the achievements of the nation throughout history
- Correct false perceptions of the history of the nation through rigorous studies that highlight its significant contributions to human progress in all fields
- Train highly skilled historians who are able to use reason and evidence to protect the history of their nation from distortion and prejudice and who believe in the principles of cultural exchange, objectivity, and analytical thinking
