Introduction to the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) Program
The Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program is designed to educate and train students to become experts in the therapeutic use of medicines and contribute to improving the health and wellness of patients. This program prepares students in pharmacotherapy, therapeutic drug monitoring, clinical research, patient assessment and referral, and clinical skills.
Program Objectives
The objectives of the PharmD program are to:
- Provide students with advanced knowledge and techniques in clinical related and outcomes research
- Train students to provide pharmaceutical care to patients and promote public health
- Develop students' ability to effectively communicate scientific information both orally and in writing to provide drug information and education
- Provide a challenging and innovative learning environment to prepare students for further advanced graduate or professional programs or scientific careers in clinical pharmacy and pharmacy practice
- Develop students' ability to engage in life-long learning and exhibit professionalism with the highest ethical standards
- Foster problem-solving and decision-making skills applied to facilitate employment in scientific careers that contribute to the growth and development of society
Program Learning Outcomes
By the end of the PharmD program, students will be able to:
- Implement the principles of pharmaceutical care in disease management
- Apply professional and social responsibility in managing all aspects of pharmacy-related activities
- Communicate effectively with patients and other healthcare providers in all matters related to providing pharmaceutical care
- Engage in self-directed, life-long learning, and continuous professional development programs
- Integrate research in recent developments in pharmaceutical care
- Participate actively as a member of the primary healthcare team and promote public health, provide drug information, and act as an educator for both patients and other healthcare providers
- Solve problems concerning pharmaceutical care
- Use evidence-based medicine for informed decision in therapeutic drug monitoring and disease therapy
- Apply ethical issues related to pharmaceutical care in medication supply and patient care
Special Admission Requirements
To be admitted into the PharmD program, candidates must fulfill the following minimum requirements:
- Hold a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from an International/UAE-recognized university with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3 out of 4 or its equivalence
- The undergraduate degree must have been achieved by attending no less than 75% of the required period
- Achieve the required English Proficiency score, with a minimum of 550 in TOEFL or 6 in IELTS (or its equivalence)
- The undergraduate degree should be in a subject that would qualify the student for the graduate major they want to pursue
- Submit a letter of approval from their employer if they are employed
Degree Completion Requirements
Completion of 72 credits is required for the program, including 36 credit hours of specific compulsory courses and 36 credit hours of Advanced Professional Experiential Placement in different specialties.
