Program Overview

Program Overview

The Oil & Gas Well Logging Essentials, Tools & Techniques course is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of well logging methods, tools, and their principles of operation. The course focuses on the relationship between measurements and reservoir petrophysical properties.

Course Objectives

The primary objectives of the course are to:

  • Get acquainted with different well logging tools and their use in determining reservoir petrophysical properties
  • Learn how to read and interpret different well logging plots, equations, and charts
  • Practice processing raw well logging data to meaningful presentations using well log plots, histograms, and cross-plots

Course Description

This course introduces participants to various well logging methods, tools, and their principles of operation, with an emphasis on the relationship between measurements and reservoir petrophysical properties. The course covers conditions and limitations for applications of various logs, graphical and analytical methods used to determine formation composition, contents, and its potential for production.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Know the different well logging tools and measurements
  • Identify the relations of electrical resistivity, radioactive, and acoustic properties of rocks
  • Compare well logging data for different reservoir conditions
  • Evaluate the effects of measurement environment on logging data
  • Assess reservoir properties using different logging data
  • Understand calibration and correction of different well logging tools
  • Process raw well logging data to meaningful representations of well log plots, histograms, and cross-plots

Resources

The course will be delivered in the form of lectures using PowerPoint, and lecture materials will be provided to trainees.

Method of Delivery & Teaching/Learning Approaches

The course is an online program that includes hands-on practice and calculations during solving sessions. A pre-exam and post-exam will be administered to evaluate participants' understanding.

Target Audience

The course is designed for petroleum engineers, exploration engineers, production engineers, geophysicists, petrophysicists, or other technical personnel with at least a BSc degree and some experience in well logging.

Course Outline

The course spans five days, covering the following topics:

  • Day 1: Review Basic Concepts of Well Logging and Environmental Effects (Exercise/Pre-Exam)
  • Day 2: Spontaneous Potential (SP), Caliper, and Gamma Ray (GR) Logs (Exercise)
  • Day 3: Resistivity and Density Measurements (Exercise)
  • Day 4: Neutron and Acoustic Porosity Logs (Exercise)
  • Day 5: Well Logging Data Interpretation (Exercise/Post-Exam)
