Program Overview

Introduction to the Writing Program

The Writing Program at NYU Abu Dhabi is designed to introduce first-year students to the fundamentals of academic argument and intellectual inquiry. The program offers courses, one-on-one tutorials, and consultations in the Writing Center to help students develop strong writing skills throughout their academic career.

Why NYU Abu Dhabi Believes in the Importance of Good Writing

The NYUAD Writing Program takes it as a given that writing is not merely a useful skill but also a way of learning and knowing. The program champions an integrated understanding of writing as a mode of inquiry and invention, as a means of communicating the results of that inquiry, and as a social and recursive activity.

What Does the Writing Program Do?

The NYUAD Writing Program works on a series of inter-linked academic components and initiatives, including:

  • Writing program curriculum development
  • Skills assessment
  • Writing across the curriculum
  • Inter-disciplinary university community service
  • Oversees Writing Center, Writing Partners Program, and Summer Scholars Program

Writing Center

The Writing Center is located in the Library and provides one-on-one consultations and support for writers at any stage of the process. The center is a co-curricular initiative designed to implement the pedagogy of the Writing Program and serve the wider undergraduate student population.

Writing Partners Program

The Writing Partners Program (WPP) is designed to facilitate a continued writing partnership between the NYUAD Writing Program and students entering the Core Curriculum from the first-year Writing Seminar. WPP consists of regular individual meetings with a writing instructor to help students articulate and implement strategies for success in the Core or in any other class that demands writing.

Summer Scholars Program

The Summer Scholars Program (SSP) offers specialized Writing Partnerships over the summer, providing continuity for students working on English language acquisition, academic writing, and critical thinking skills. SSP is an eight-week distance-learning program that allows students to practice oral and written expression over the course of the summer.
