Introduction to NYU Democracy Scholars
The NYU Democracy Scholars program is a free residential opportunity for rising high school seniors in New York City. The program aims to provide students with a college environment experience, exploring relevant topics in political philosophy and social justice, and developing confidence in their academic and leadership capabilities.
Program Details
- The program is a three-week residential summer seminar in political philosophy.
- Students participate in small discussion-based seminars led by NYU professors and gain experience in college-level reading, writing, and critical thinking.
- The program provides college application guidance and mentorship, including a college letter of recommendation from an NYU professor.
- Students learn how to positively affect changes on social issues and gain real-world experience as student leaders, community activists, and global citizens.
Eligibility and Application
- Students who are current juniors in high school (graduation year 2026) and NYC residents are eligible to apply.
- The application process includes:
- Personal, educational, and family history information.
- Attachments such as an academic transcript and a letter of recommendation.
- Long answer questions, including reflections on social issues and texts.
Program Structure
- The summer residential program takes place from July 6 to 26.
- Students reside in Weinstein Hall and participate in morning seminar sessions, afternoon study sessions, and interactive activities.
- The program also includes a nine-month civic engagement leadership project, where students work on projects related to social issues.
COVID-19 Safety Requirements
- All students are required to be fully vaccinated and boosted with an FDA-authorized or WHO-listed vaccine.
- Students must upload vaccination records to the NYU Student Health Center portal before the start of the program.
- Other COVID-19 protocols include the Violet Go Pass, optional masking, and reporting positive cases and isolating at home if ill or testing positive for COVID-19.
Civic Engagement Projects
- Students participate in civic engagement projects, which include researching and presenting on social issues such as education, immigration, and gentrification.
- Examples of past projects are available, showcasing the work of New York City high school students.
