Advancing Research Education on the Health of New Americans
Program Overview
Introduction to AREHNA
The Advancing Research Education on the Health of New Americans (AREHNA) program is designed to train early-career nurse scientists to study the social determinants of health in New American populations and their associated mechanisms across multiple levels.
Program Description
The program aims to build a Nursing & Midwifery Network of Early Career Researchers in Immigrant Health. "New Americans" (NA) are people who have come to live in the United States for personal and work opportunities, comprising 15.3% of the US population, with 77% being naturalized citizens or legally present. The migration experience affects a person's health throughout their lifetime and produces unique healthcare needs.
Program Objectives
The program will train early-career nurse scientists to:
- Study the social determinants of health in NA populations and their associated mechanisms across multiple levels (e.g., individual, interpersonal, community, societal)
- Address the unique health and healthcare needs of NA populations
- Develop innovative research design, methods, and approaches to address these needs
Program Structure
- Participants will attend an all-expenses-paid, week-long, intensive in-person training in New York City, offered twice annually over three years
- A three-month virtual mentoring program will follow the in-person training
- Participants will receive a small pilot grant to support the development of their programs of research
Program Outcomes
By the end of the program, participants will have developed the skills and knowledge necessary to become national experts on the health of New American populations. The program aims to create a national network of nurse researchers who will foster the next generation of nurse scientists in this area as they progress in their careers.
Research Areas
The program focuses on the health of New American populations, including:
- Social determinants of health
- Healthcare needs of immigrant populations
- Innovative research design, methods, and approaches to address these needs
Participant Benefits
- Intensive in-person training
- Virtual mentoring program
- Small pilot grant to support research development
- Opportunities for professional networking and development
Expected Outcomes
The program expects to create a cadre of national experts on the health of New American populations, poised to foster the next generation of nurse scientists in this area.
