Program Overview

Summer Undergraduate Research Program

The Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) at NYU Grossman School of Medicine offers college students the opportunity to conduct hands-on biomedical research in collaboration with faculty.

SURP Overview

As a member of the summer class, students join approximately 30 students working in the exciting academic medical environment at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and NYU Langone Health. When accepted into the program, students are matched with a laboratory of interest in their preferred research area. Placement ultimately depends on the availability of mentors and the appropriateness of a lab for a summer intern.

In a typical week, students spend most of their time conducting hands-on research under their research mentor's direction in their lab. They also participate in weekly "Conversations with a Scientist/Physician" lunch sessions, journal clubs, and a series of Wednesday seminars followed by dinner at a local restaurant. There are also optional social activities, such as movie nights, museum tours, plays, and concerts.

At the end of the summer, students have the opportunity to present their research at the Leadership Alliance National Symposium and give a poster presentation to the NYU Langone research community.

Program Details

  • The program expects a commitment to the program on a full-time basis for the duration of the internship.

SURP Research Disciplines

As a summer research intern, students have the opportunity to work with faculty in any of the following biomedical training areas:

  • Biomedical imaging and technology
  • Biostatistics
  • Cell biology
  • Computational biomedicine
  • Developmental genetics
  • Epidemiology
  • Immunology and inflammation
  • Microbiology
  • Molecular biophysics
  • Molecular oncology and tumor immunology
  • Molecular pharmacology
  • Neuroscience and physiology
  • Population health
  • Stem cell biology

Criteria for Admission

The Summer Undergraduate Research Program application is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. The program welcomes applications from mature, well-qualified undergraduates who have completed their sophomore or junior year of college. To qualify, students should have completed at least one full semester of bench laboratory research.

The program selects summer research interns on the basis of:

  • Research experience
  • Academic record
  • Letters of recommendation from faculty advisors, research supervisors, or both It is essential that students demonstrate their commitment to a career in biomedical research.
