Program Overview


Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship

The Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine offers exposure to an extraordinarily challenging case mix, including large numbers of patients with Prader-Willi syndrome, growth hormone deficiency, type 1 diabetes mellitus, Down syndrome, and intersex conditions. The program is led by Robert L. Levine, MD, PhD, and administered by the Department of Pediatrics.


Program Details

The goal of the three-year training program is for the trainee to develop a range of attributes necessary for expertise as a clinical consultant, educator, and researcher in the field of pediatric endocrinology and diabetes. The program aims to train fellows to develop the following attributes:


  • Comprehensive and specialized knowledge in basic and clinical science
  • Expertise in providing medical care that includes advanced skills in history taking and physical examination
  • Expert clinical judgement
  • Clinical analysis and case management
  • Technical proficiency within the clinical setting
  • Proficiency in practice-based learning
  • Expertise in interaction with healthcare systems

  • Commitment to scholarship, teaching, and research
  • The ability to obtain appropriate history and conduct physical examinations for endocrine patients in outpatient and inpatient settings; formulate an appropriate differential diagnosis; order appropriate tests and formulate a treatment plan; and develop the knowledge and skills necessary to prepare patients with endocrine disorders and their families to effectively manage these conditions at home

Curriculum

The curriculum emphasizes clinical skills as well as basic and clinical research. Fellows participate in the care of infants, children, and adolescents who present with a wide range of endocrine disorders, including growth hormone deficiency, diabetes mellitus, thyroid diseases, adrenal and gonadal disorders, ambiguous genitalia and intersex conditions, abnormal pubertal development, and hirsutism. Fellows rotate at NYU Langone HospitalLong Island and other inpatient and outpatient settings, and also pursue in-depth research projects.


Conferences

The Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship offers comprehensive didactic training. Fellows participate in conferences including pediatric endocrinology didactic lectures, research oversight committee meetings, journal club, a core competency lecture series, research in progress, diabetes case management, and adult and pediatric joint case conferences. Learning opportunities also include multidisciplinary case conferences; quality improvement meetings; board review; a clinical, basic science, and biomedical seminar series; and diabetes and endocrine symposia.


How to Apply

All applications to the fellowship program are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The program sponsors J-1 visa applications. The application must include:


  • Proof of completion of an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)accredited pediatrics residency
  • Results of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Steps 1, 2, and 3 (first-attempt pass)
  • Three letters of recommendation One fellowship position is available each year.
