PhD in Applied Linguistics and Multilingual Education

The PhD program in Applied Linguistics and Multilingual Education prepares scholars to conduct original, impactful research on critical issues at the intersections of language, education, and society. Grounded in applied linguistic and educational theories, the program engages students in questions of language pedagogy, policy, assessment, and discourse in a wide range of educational settings.

Research

Doctoral students receive rigorous training in current research methodologies, foundational theories, and practices in applied linguistics, TESOL, and bi/multilingual education while gaining expertise in their own areas of inquiry. Working closely with faculty mentors, students hone their research skills and develop their research agenda, while preparing to conduct impactful research in diverse educational and social contexts, locally and globally.

Funding for Full-Time PhD Students

NYU Steinhardt offers a competitive fellowship package for all full-time PhD students, including international students. Fellowship funding requires that students fulfill a semesterly research requirement, complete various academic requirements, and maintain good academic standing. The full-time fellowship does not come with required work or teaching obligations.
