Introduction to the Czech Republic: Tonmeister Technology Program

The Czech Republic: Tonmeister Technology program is a unique study abroad opportunity that allows students to explore the art of recording live music in Prague, a city renowned for its vibrant music scene and world-class musicians. This program is designed for graduate students and focuses on producing classical, electro-acoustic, jazz, world, and folk music in acoustic spaces.

Program Dates

The program is scheduled to run from June 1-28, 2026, although these dates are tentative and subject to change.

The program is led by Paul Geluso, Music Assistant Professor and Director of the Music Technology Program, Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions.

Eligibility and Application Process

Who Can Participate

The program is open to:

• NYU graduate students
• NYU undergraduates who have:
  • 96+ earned credits
  • related coursework
  • approval from the faculty director as well as their adviser
• Non-NYU graduate students and professionals who are:
  • U.S. citizens or permanent residents
  • Currently hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in the United States

Academics

Students register for two summer courses:

• MPATE-GE 2311, Section 099 (Class #4081) - Tonmeister Technology I (3 credits)
• MPATE-GE 2312, Section 099 (Class #4082) - Tonmeister Technology II (3 credits)

These courses are offered through the Music Technology Program in the Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions.

Program Housing and Travel Logistics

Housing

Students stay in shared-occupancy housing arranged by the Office of Global Affairs, included in the Program Fee.

Flight, Travel, and Visa Information

• Flight: Students book their own travel to coincide with program dates.
• Passport: All program participants must have a valid passport, valid at least six months beyond the program end date.
• Visa: Review visa information for this destination.
