Program Overview
Italy: Art Therapy Intern Abroad Program
The Italy: Art Therapy Intern Abroad Program offers students the opportunity to practice hands-on art therapy training in Florence, Italy. Through work in schools, rehabilitation facilities, orphanages, and other service organizations, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the skills needed as an art therapist.

The program takes place in Florence, Italy.

The program dates are June 25 - July 10, 2026 (tentative; subject to change).

The program is led by Marygrace Berberian, Clinical Associate Professor of Art Therapy, Department of Art and Art Professions.

Eligibility & Application Process
Who can participate:
- NYU graduate students who are matriculated in the Art Therapy program and have completed the first year of the degree
- NYU graduate students and visiting students with some clinical practice in delivering mental health interventions will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Note that visiting students must both:
- Be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and
- Hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in the United States

Students register for a total of 3 credits:
- ARTT-GE 2302, Section 099 (Class #4050) - Internship in Art Therapy (3 credits)

Costs & Scholarships
Direct Costs Billed by NYU
Participants will be billed for the cost of the graduate course following the standard per-credit rate for NYU Steinhardt Graduate Study Tuition and Fees. In addition, study abroad courses have a supplemental Program Fee that covers the cost of housing abroad, program activities and visits, group transportation in-country, and international health insurance. Students can expect to be billed:
- Steinhardt Graduate Tuition (3 credits) - $6,816
- Steinhardt Graduate Registration and Services Fees - $730
- Program Fee - $1,900
- International Health Insurance - Included
Estimated Direct Cost Total - $9,446
Out-of-Pocket Costs
Students are responsible for purchasing flights to and from the program location. In addition to airfare, participants should budget for other out-of-pocket costs, including daily meals (except for included welcome and farewell meals); transportation to and from the airport; passport and/or visa fees (if applicable); vaccination costs (if applicable); and other personal incidentals.

Program Housing & Travel Logistics
Housing
Students stay in shared-occupancy housing arranged by the Office of Global Affairs. Housing is included in the Program Fee.
Flight, Travel, and Visa Information
- Flight: Students book their own travel to coincide with program dates.
- Passport: All program participants are required to have a valid passport, which must be valid for at least six months beyond the program's end date.
