Introduction to the MD/MPA in Health Policy & Management

The NYU Grossman School of Medicine and NYU Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service offer a dual MD/MPA degree in medicine and health policy and management. This program provides students with critical perspectives on the social, cultural, and economic forces that shape healthcare delivery and health outcomes.

Program Overview

The dual MD/MPA program prepares students for a career in nearly any sector of the healthcare system. Graduates of the program work in diverse settings, ranging from private hospitals to nonprofits, consulting firms to managed-care organizations, and government agencies.

Timeline for Completing the MD/MPA in Health Policy and Management

The MPA in health policy and management is a 45-credit program that can be completed with the MD degree in four years. During the first two years of medical school, students fulfill the preclerkship and some clinical components of the MD curriculum, earning 9 credits that can be applied toward the MPA. In the third year, students take time away from medical school to focus full-time on the MPA program. In the summer between the third and fourth years, students return to medical school and continue completing the MD degree during the final year.

Four-Year MD/MPA Schedule

The following table outlines the four-year schedule for the MD/MPA program:

  • Year 1: Medical School Preclerkship Curriculum
  • Year 2: Medical School Clerkship Curriculum
  • Year 3: MPA Curriculum
  • Year 4: Medical School Curriculum & MPA Capstone Project

MD/MPA Program Application, Tuition, and Funding

Students apply to the MPA program directly through NYU Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service during the second year at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. The MPA tuition rates, merit-based MPA scholarships, and other options for financing the MPA degree are available through the NYU Wagner website. Students receive a scholarship to cover the cost of tuition for the MD degree program, provided each student maintains satisfactory academic progress.
