Integrated Interventional Radiology Residency
Program Overview
Integrated Interventional Radiology Residency
The Integrated Interventional Radiology Residency at NYU Grossman School of Medicine trains physicians to develop outstanding imaging interpretation abilities, clinical acumen, and technical skills for a successful career in interventional radiology. The program focuses on synthesizing diagnostic radiologic imaging, interventional radiologic procedures, patient management, and clinical medicine with a constant focus on delivering high-quality patient care.
Program Overview
The fully accredited, five-year training program prepares residents to become board-certified in both diagnostic radiology and interventional radiology, providing thoughtfully balanced training in all diagnostic radiology subspecialties and robust procedural and clinical training in interventional radiology.
Eligibility and Admission
Residents who have completed a one-year, accredited clinical internship are eligible to apply. A preliminary year in general surgery is preferred, but the program also accepts interns from internal medicine, surgical specialties, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, neurology, family practice, and emergency medicine.
Resident Clinical Training
Physicians in the Integrated Interventional Radiology Residency complete the same training as those in the Diagnostic Radiology Residency for the first three years of the program. During the final two years, training is concentrated on interventional radiology. Clinical rotations are organized around competency-based goals and objectives in interventional radiology, with the majority of rotations being procedure-based and taking place at various hospitals and outpatient centers.
- Residents refine procedural and clinical skills with increasing autonomy throughout their training.
- Clinical research and quality improvement initiatives are an important part of the interventional radiology curriculum.
- Integrated interventional radiology residents have the same research opportunities as those in the Diagnostic Radiology Residency.
Resident Conferences
Integrated interventional radiology residents take part in a comprehensive two-year curriculum, which includes:
- A weekly interventional radiology case lecture series
- Case conference
- Journal club
- Regular participation in surgery, wound care, and hepatobiliary multidisciplinary conferences
- Presentation at a monthly interventional radiology morbidity and mortality conference
The goal of these experiences is to model the roles of the interventional radiologist as expert consultants to other physicians and key members of multidisciplinary care teams.
Program Leadership
The Integrated Interventional Radiology Residency is overseen by:
- Nancy R. Fefferman, MD, Vice Chair for Radiology Education
- Kopal S. Kulkarni, MD, Program Director
- Vikram Rajpurohit, MD, Associate Program Director
Research Opportunities
Clinical research and quality improvement initiatives are integral to the program, with residents encouraged to attend major interventional radiology conferences and participate in local meetings to network with peers from other institutions.
