Categorical Medicine Residency Tracks
Program Overview
Introduction to the Categorical Medicine Residency Program
The Categorical Medicine Residency program at NYU Langone's Department of Medicine is a three-year track that provides residents with the training they need for board certification. As a categorical medicine resident, individuals care for patients with medically complex conditions in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Program Overview
The program offers two options for completing rotations: the Bellevue categorical medicine track and the NYU Langone categorical medicine track. The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) codes for these tracks are:
- Bellevue categorical medicine track: NRMPC0
- NYU Langone categorical medicine track: NRMPC3
This allows residents to choose the environment that best suits their personal learning style. The program believes that building communities of residents with common interests results in a richer environment for learning, feedback, mentorship, and academic pursuits.
Residency Tracks
Bellevue Categorical Medicine Track
Residents in this track rotate at Bellevue, the flagship facility of NYC Health + Hospitals, for the majority of their inpatient clinical rotations. The remaining inpatient rotations are at Tisch Hospital, Kimmel Pavilion, and the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System. This track provides a more focused experience at Bellevue, where residents work alongside physicians dedicated to the social mission of the city's largest hospital.
NYU Langone Categorical Medicine Track
In this track, residents spend 60 percent of their inpatient time at Tisch Hospital and the Kimmel Pavilion and 40 percent at Bellevue and the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System. This track provides greater exposure to pulmonary disease, organ transplantation, and inflammatory bowel disease in a tertiary referral center. Residents develop longitudinal relationships with hospitalist faculty as part of the Firm System, NYU Grossman School of Medicine's faculty mentorship program.
Postgraduate Years
Postgraduate Year 1
During the intern year, residents complete inpatient and ambulatory care rotations. Inpatient rotations are on the general medicine services and the medical intensive care units at the three hospitals, as well as the coronary care unit (CCU) at Bellevue. During non-inpatient weeks, interns work at their continuity clinics and participate in a variety of two-week electives.
Postgraduate Year 2
As part of the junior residency year, residents learn to lead a ward team and work more closely with attending physicians. They manage patient care with greater independence on night medicine rotations and gain more experience in intensive care medicine.
Postgraduate Year 3
In the senior residency year, residents gain greater autonomy leading medical teams on the general medical services and in intensive care units at all three Manhattan hospitals. They also spend one month as a Bellevue medical consult and continue outpatient practice in their longitudinal primary care clinic.
Conclusion
The Categorical Medicine Residency program at NYU Langone's Department of Medicine provides residents with a comprehensive education and training experience. With two tracks to choose from, residents can select the environment that best suits their learning style and career goals. The program is designed to provide a rich and supportive learning environment, with opportunities for feedback, mentorship, and academic pursuits.
