Introduction to the Practical Research Experience Program (PREP)
The Practical Research Experience Program (PREP) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) is a summer program designed to help students refine their research skills at one of Europe's top-ranked technical institutions.
Program Overview
The TUM PREP is a summer research program that takes place from July 1 to August 28, 2026. The program includes a kick-off, orientation, and framework program with day trips, excursions, and a buddy program. The program language is English, and there is no tuition fee. Accommodation is provided by the Student Union Munich, and participants receive a transcript, certificates, and 10 ECTS (5 US credits) upon completion.
Research Areas and Projects
Students can choose from over 70 research projects among 7 different TUM Schools and various subject areas at the TUM campuses in Munich, Garching, and Freising. The projects are available in various fields, including:
- Architecture
- Governance
- Management
- Medicine and Health Sciences
- School of Life Sciences
- Engineering and natural sciences
Students can browse the different projects through the online TUM PREP Project Database, which allows them to search for projects by keyword, academic field, or TUM School/Department.
Application and Admission
Applications for TUM PREP 2026 will be accepted between October 1 and November 23, 2025. Students must upload their documents online and submit their applications by the deadline. Professors must also send recommendation letters by the deadline. Students are encouraged to apply for three research projects to enhance their chances of getting accepted.
Eligibility and Selection
The selection process will be completed by the end of January 2026. Students will be informed about their admission to the program between mid-December 2025 and the end of January 2026.
Additional Information
- Only students from NYU New York are eligible to participate.
- Tandon graduate students cannot receive academic credit for their participation.
- Tandon Ph.D. students are not eligible to participate.
- Additional funding is available through scholarships for research from DAAD.
