Program Overview


Dual Degree with the Silver School of Social Work at New York University

The NYU School of Law offers a dual degree program leading to a Juris Doctor (JD) and a Master of Social Work (MSW). Students can pursue a JD/MSW at the Silver School of Social Work at NYU.


Program Description

Students who participate in this program will have exceptional preparation for practice in either field. As a social worker with legal skills, graduates will be prepared to advocate more effectively for clients within the complex legal system. As an attorney with clinical social work skills, graduates will be better prepared to discover and understand the special needs of people who are disadvantaged.


Program Structure

The Silver School of Social Work offers students a clinical social work internship component and courses on policy and practice. In the JD/MSW program, certain courses are accepted for credit by both schools. Students will complete:


  • 71 credits of Law coursework
  • 52 credits of Social Work coursework Students will be exempt from:
  • Practicum Instruction I (4 credits)
  • Diversity, Racism, Oppression, and Privilege (3 credits)
  • 2 elective courses (6 credits)
  • 3 credits of Law courses will be applied to the MSW degree
  • 12 credits of Social Work courses will be applied to the JD degree

Admission Requirements

Those interested in a dual degree with a Master in Social Work must be admitted to both schools independently. Applications may be filed simultaneously before enrolling at either school, or during the first year at NYU School of Law.


Program Duration

Students are expected to spend three consecutive terms at the Silver School of Social Work and five semesters at the NYU School of Law. The final semester must also be spent at the New York University School of Law. Students may not receive either degree until they have completed all coursework for both degrees.
