Program Overview
Introduction to the Program
The program in question is INTM-SHU 271 Re-made in China, a Dean's Service Scholars (DSS) Course. This course focuses on the creative reuse and transformation of waste materials, exploring innovative ways to turn discarded items into valuable products across various design disciplines.
Program Description
China and the United States are among the world's largest economies and generators of waste. Following China's decision to stop importing waste to focus on its own, there has been a global push to rethink waste management. Designers are now redefining waste as a material that can be transformed into something valuable and sold as a new product. The term "re-make" refers to the process of making something again or differently.
Course Objectives and Structure
In this class, students will have the opportunity to interact directly with members of the NYU Shanghai community. They will conduct research on waste management practices within the community and propose solutions tailored to their needs. The course will explore how discarded materials can be transformed into potential products in areas such as art, graphic and industrial design, architecture, fashion, and textiles. By combining traditional techniques with new technologies and sustainable design philosophy, students will learn how to address social and environmental problems effectively.
