Program Overview

The Design program is a comprehensive course of study that covers various aspects of design, media, and computer science. The program is structured into six semesters, each with a specific set of courses and requirements.


Semester 1

In the first semester, students take the following core subjects:


  • P1 Introduction to Programming (Lecture + Exercise, 4 + 2 semester hours, 9 ECTS, Grade)
  • P2 Digital Media (Lecture + Exercise, 3 + 2 semester hours, 6 ECTS, Grade)
  • P3 Analysis for Computer Scientists (Lecture + Exercise, 4 + 2 semester hours, 9 ECTS, Grade) Additionally, students take the applied subject:
  • WP2 Grundlagen der Kunst- und Medienpraxis (passed/failed)
    • Basics of painterly design (Seminar, 3 semester hours, 3 ECTS)
    • Basics of graphic design (Seminar, 3 semester hours, 3 ECTS)

Semester 2

In the second semester, students take the following core subjects:


  • P4 Programming and Modelling (Lecture + Exercise, 3 + 2 semester hours, 6 ECTS, Grade)
  • P5 Algorithms and Data Structures (Lecture + Exercise, 3 + 2 semester hours, 6 ECTS, Grade)

Semester 3

In the third semester, students take the following core subjects:


  • P8 Linear Algebra for Computer Scientists (Lecture + Exercise, 3 + 2 semester hours, 6 ECTS, Grade)
  • WP14 Practical Course on Software Development or WP15 Practical Course on Operating Systems (Practical course + Plenum, 9 + 2 semester hours, 12 ECTS, Grade) Additionally, students take the applied subjects:

Semester 6

In the sixth semester, students take the following core subjects:


  • P18 Project Competence Multimedia (Practical course, 3 semester hours, 3 ECTS, BE/NB)
  • P19 Abschlussmodul (Bachelor Thesis, 12 ECTS, Grade)
    • Viva Voce (3 ECTS, Grade) Additionally, students take the applied subjects:
  • WP24 Advanced Topics in Media Informatics for Bachelor II (6 ECTS, Grade)
  • WP25 Advanced Topics in Media Informatics for Bachelor III (6 ECTS, Grade)

Course Specific Information

  • Advanced topics: Media informatics students can receive advanced topics credits for elective courses - lectures, practical courses, or seminars. Since 2015, students need to complete three advanced topics.
  • Interdisciplinary competences: In addition, students need to fulfill the following competence modules:
    1. Introduction to Personal and Social competences (P16)
    2. Ethics and Law in Computer Science (P17)
